Wednesday update

Wednesday, June 28, 2006
Seems like people –mostly in Bantul area- are living in the tent still after a month of the devastation. Government said that the rebuilding of houses will start on July second (source: www.detik.com). There is other information that might be interesting and it was written by the volunteer in the organization that giving service of information about earthquake relied in Yogyakarta. Find the full article at http://jogja.mediacenter.or.id/?dir=data&file=detail&id=321

Sheepindonesia received the wire of funds
I’ve talked to Yulia Rina Wijaya, head of secretary at the sheepindonesia office yesterday. It was really nice conversation and they have move from the ‘emergency office’ now. They still run a relief effort programs. They received our transfer of funds. I am attaching the information through mailing list and other post in this blog.

Please let me know and Thanks a lot.
I’ve got the transfer money for the fundraising, but I do not know who did transfer it. Please let me know who transfer to my vancity account (I just knew it from Branch 1). For the future reference, please send me an e-mail of notification when you’re transferring funds.
Thanks to Shawna Baldwin too for her transfer through my TD account. I will send to Indonesia along with other donation that comes. Thanks as well to Ellen – Ibu Wil’s daughter- to send the cheque . And thanks to Ibu Wil to re-wrote the cheque to me.
Seems like I won’t send the money this Friday, since to many yet ( In total is $295). I still wait for some other donation. I gave a little proposal to one of Indonesian antique store in Vancouver when there was a car free day festival the other day. So, I hope that we will get more donations.

Bethesda hospital emnployee
I ‘ve got an email from Prapti’s sister and she told me that in Bethesda Hospital itself the are around 300 employees that their house are in bad damage from the quake. So, I am thinking that for the third round we might consider send the donation to Bethesda hospital, and it will help even though not much, but we try right?

Some photos from home and CUSO
It was sad when I received photos of their hose from my brother in law. Their house is still stands but there are a lot of damage and need reconstructions. Thanks to the Creator that they are fine. Even their smile are there still…
I will be home soon as well. It will be fine and it will be nice to see them again and helping others. I have plan to go with CUSO earlier, a month earlier from my placement plan. I will be in Jakarta and Yogyakarta before going to Flores -my placement with CUSO- in the beginning of September.
Speaking about CUSO, some friend and CUSO did a great job in Fundraising in Toronto area last weekend. Great job Deborah, and Jaya and friends..

Story from the field
My friend JP Budi Kusumo just returns from Yogyakart from personal mission to help people there. His stories and pictures are available at his blog: http://jogjarelief.blogspot.com/
Here is one of his story:
Mbah Ali, one humble person ...
When we showing another groups of people who carry foods to Bantul area, we make a stop at Ganjuran area also in Bantul district. we met a person called mbah Ali. he told us that the village he lived also destructed by the quake, he sells souvenirs at the local market. he said life must go on, though all gone we must keep optimize an acrry on our life.He said that when the quake strike, the govt dont have any help and all communication were down, he manage to seek for food for his neighbour, which is lived mostly by senior citizen, he manage to have about several hundreds kilos of rice and some instant noodles for the surrounding people around his village about 75 people in his area and about 600 people in his village. He also told us that the aid from govt has not yet reach them, when the helps from his friends runs out, luckily destiny have us meet, we then drive with him accompany us to the village left his tiny shop just like that, showing us the village and we able to at least extends they to survive for several more days by the food we carry.

For more stories and photos, please check his blog.

Bethesda, Sheepindonesia and second round

Tuesday June 13, 2006
Since I update yesterday, and I did not send the notification through e-mail list-apology for that, I will put some more information for today’s update.

Second report from Sheepindonesia
I have received second report from Yulia Rina Wijaya who works for Sheep Indonesia (http://www.sheepindonesia.org/) regarding their work in earthquake relief effort in Yogyakarta and surroundings. For detail report I did send to you through e-mail. Rina, Aan and Andreas Subiantoro were To-Canada Xroads as well. They are working so hard in helping people, even though their office is in bad damage from the devastations.

Progress at Bethesda Hospital.
Endang Budiarti send me an e-mail related with the situation of the hospital and earthquake victims patients. As the last information, on June 13, 2006, there are 3054 patients, 10 people waiting for the surgery, because it is so difficult case, dead 159, and there are 71 patients are not stay at the hospital, but go for check up sometimes. There were 314 patients get the surgery already. All service are free of charge.
There are some problems still around:
- Finance, the government (health authority) said that all the cost of the earthquake patients will be covered by the government, but the public health insureance said only the class III patients will be covered. This situation develop misunderstanding between the stakeholders.
-Logistic; a lot of medical tools, and other equipment are lost/gone/stolen/ because of the chaotic situation in the first week after the earthquake. The question is will government covered these cost as well?
- Will the electricity, water and telephone getting a discount from related department?
For detail information if you want to donate some money directly to Bethesda Hospital, here is their account information:
Lippo Bank
Swift Code : LIP BID JA
Account number : 787.30.03451.5
Account Name : Yakkum Bethesda Yogyakarta
Address : Jl. Jend Sudirman 50 Yogyakarta, Indonesia

short update

Friday June 9, 2006
Today is the last day of working for some people, but not I. Since the last update (which is Moday morning) I haven’t been really gathered some information about Yogyakarta Earthquake relief effort. Some big news that yesterday morning (Thursday) Merapi Vulcano had been erupted again. It was quite big and the lave flows was more than 5 kilometers to the south slopes of this most active volcano in Indonesia. Yeah Yogyakarta has being “trap” with the natural disaster. Like the picture, even though the Yogyakarta symbol has a little damage in the middle.

The fund raising so far
A few days I have been developing some ideas – kind of small proposal for this fund raising effort. Before going to far, I would like to say thank you so much to Robin Susanto and Arla Monthiegh-friend from Wasa , Cranbrook area for sending some money. So far I have been gathered $250; and I did send some to Indonesia already from ‘the first wave’ in the first week after the earthquake. I did send $ 1100 already in the first time (june 02, 06)

Ibu Wil’s birthday party.
Tommorow, my roommate and I will go to Victoria for Ibu Wil birthday party and also fund raising event for Yogyakarta earthquake relief effort. I hope there will be a lot of friends coming and mostly ex Crossroads participants. I am looking forward to it very much.

monday morning update

Monday June 5, 06
For couple of days I gathered some information related to the Yogyakarta earthquake relief effort. Beside that, some people asking me about this blog and how they can help, and is there any tax receipt for sending the donation for tax return purpose? And I just sy it now that the purpose of this blog and fund raising effort are all in personal purpose and there will be no tax receipt or in such like that. Some people also asking about the security of my bank information, and I said it is okay, and I just belive that we will do all our best just for the good cause. At the moment I still develop some ideas about fundraising and all the distribution mechanism of the aid. I will put it in the next update.

Rina’s organization
Finally, I had a chance to talk to Rina the other day. She is okay and I’ve got some information about her organization work related to help the earthquake victims. Her organization office is totally damage and they must move to one of the staff house to run the office. Her organization called SHEEPIndonesia, you can find her organization website at http://www.sheepindonesia.org/eng/?Login=f13a7501fa8dd9f17f4ee7c15c858a43
Related with the earthquake report, and update. Rina send me an a file that I can not put in this blog yet, but I will send you separately through email attachment.

Ibu Wil birthday party –fund raising
It is brilliant idea that Ibu Wil will organize a fundraising in her birthday party this coming weekend. Here is the invitation from her:
Hello all,
My birthday is coming up and I've decided that I will have a get-together with family and friends by having a potluck at my house, on Saturday June 10 at 5 .30 pm and you are invited.
Also, many of you have probably been following the news about the earthquake in Yogyakarta (indonesia)last week as several among us were volunteers for Canadian Crossroads in that very city and we still have many friends and family there.
I've been in touch with Rina and with Prapti and their families are well, although their houses have some damage. Rina's NGO office was flattened.
Prapti was telling us how they admit and treat thousands more patients in the hospital than usual.
Rina is running an NGO, called SHEEP, Dimas and her have been dong a lot of relief work in Aceh, Papua and other locations also but now they work in their own community. They run mobile medical units and do a lot of logistical work
Sigit has been very active collecting information and he has coordinated it in his website:
http://yogya-peduli.blogspot.com/ Here you can read everything about it. He is also coordinating fundraising to help some of the victims by opening a bankaccount for that purpose at VanCity Credit union.
In stead of a birthday present I would invite you to bring a donation for earthquake relief in Yogyakarta. Sigit will also be at the potluck and probably have more recent information and pictures.
In the mean time I hope the weather will permit us to enjoy an outdoor potluck on Saturday and if not , there is lots of indoor space.
I'm enjoying the long days of summer in the garden and the apiary. Tomorrow is an important day : I will be extracting the first honey of the season, called 'Springtime Honey'.
hope to see you all on Saturday,
Love
Wil

Fundraising story from friend in California
Friend of mine who live in San Fransisco, he has a fundraising effort as well. He organize some friends and family there to help and also he will have a fundraising event, such as music, etc. He has a hotel in south of Yogyakarta area that has been destroyed as well from the quake. His hotel employee (around 100 people) mostly lost some of their family member and more than that they lost their homes.

More info and fund raising ideas

The picture from Bantul area was taken by friend of mine from UGM network.
In the sixth days after the Yogyakarta earthquake, I’ve been gathering some information about situation and how the relief effort is has been done over there. Here is some updates

Bethesda Hospital updates
Last night, I’ve talked to Prapti and Endang regarding the situation in Bethesda Hospital. They said that the situation is has been improve in term of less chaotic. Some aid is starting to flow to the area and to the hospital as well. Medical team from France, Malaysia, Korea and Germany are come to help at the hospital. In the ‘normal’ situation, the capacity of the hospital is 432 patients; but now, there are 2230 patients in the hospital. In one day usually they do 8 surgeries, now they do 67 surgeries per day; and still at least 300 patients waiting for the surgeries. Most of the earthquake victims have a fracture cases. All the rooms are being used for the patients including meeting rooms, gym till the hall ways. According to Endang-the head of Pharmacy department- now the problem is the patients need better nutrition food after their surgery.

Yakkum Emergeny Unit
Along with the Bethesda hospital, YEU working to help patients in term of food and other logistics needs. Arshinta send me her organization information how to donate to YEU. For more story, you can check their website at http://www.yeu.or.id/disaster.php?id=a1d0c6e83f027327d8461063f4ac58a6

Fundaraising ideas
Beginning with the simple idea of helping in this disaster relief effort and the idea of ‘cutting’ an administrative cost of sending aid to the area that had been effected by the natural disaster; Some of friends in Vancouver suggested me to organize the fund to send to Indonesia; so I open a special bank account at Vancity Credit Union for this purpose. For friends who live outside of Vancouver and/ wherever there is no Vancity CU you can use my TD Canada Trust account. All the information I put in the previous post in this blog. The idea of sending in collective and directly to the local organization/individual that works in the relief effort are:
Minimize the wiring cost (fee) to send money individually; For example Vancity charged $20 per sending, and TD Canada charged $ 30.
Minimize or even cutting the ‘administrative/operational cost’ in aid distribution.

Acknowledgement
Thanks to Robin(Vancouver), Arla Monteigh (Wasa lake-East Kootenay) who are starting transfer the funds
Thanks to Shawna, Marlene, and Cynthia who are always giving support and commited to send some funds.
Welcome to some friends into this list .
